TikTok to introduce daily limits and new restrictions for teens after at least $100 million settlement

Platform reached an agreement with Alabama before a scheduled trial and will introduce new protections for underage users in the state

TikTok has reached a settlement worth at least $100 million with the state of Alabama and agreed to implement a series of changes designed to protect teenage users.

The agreement was announced just days before a trial involving the social media platform was scheduled to begin.

Alabama sued TikTok in 2025, alleging that features on the platform could harm the well-being of children and teenagers and that the company had failed to adequately disclose those risks. The settlement ends the case without those allegations being decided at trial.

Two-hour daily limit and overnight restrictions

Among the changes included in the agreement is a default two-hour daily limit for underage users in Alabama.

Teenagers will also have the option to use a feed without algorithmic personalization.

The agreement also includes overnight restrictions, changes involving cosmetic filters, periodic usage breaks, private accounts by default and expanded parental controls.

Settlement could reach $300 million

According to the Alabama Attorney General’s Office, the state will receive at least $100 million under the terms of the agreement.

The amount could reach $300 million, depending on whether certain conditions are met.

TikTok said the settlement expands safety tools the platform has already been developing for teenage users.

The relationship between social media platforms and minors has become the focus of growing scrutiny across the United States, with lawsuits and legislative proposals addressing screen time, privacy, age verification and parental controls.
