The Longhorns erased a 20-point fourth-quarter deficit and now sit at the top of the AP college football ranking
Texas has a new reason to celebrate. The Longhorns climbed to No. 1 in the Associated Press Top 25 on Sunday after completing a historic comeback against previously top-ranked Ohio State.
Texas defeated the Buckeyes 24-23 after trailing 23-3 entering the fourth quarter. It was the largest fourth-quarter comeback ever recorded in a victory over an AP No. 1 team.
From 20 points down to No. 1
Texas appeared to be headed toward a loss before the game changed dramatically in the final period. The Longhorns scored 21 unanswered points to erase the 20-point deficit and complete the comeback.
The result reshaped the national rankings. Texas moved into the top spot, followed by Georgia at No. 2 and Notre Dame at No. 3. Indiana moved to No. 4 and Miami reached No. 5.
Ohio State dropped from No. 1 to No. 6 following the loss. Oregon suffered another major fall, dropping 15 positions to No. 21 after losing to Oklahoma State. Michigan returned to the ranking at No. 19 after beating Oklahoma.
For Texas, the new ranking marks its first time at No. 1 during the regular season since October 2024 and its earliest appearance at the top of the poll in a season since 1965.
