New cards begin rolling out at service centers Wednesday with images highlighting Florida’s history, natural environment and space program
Florida’s driver’s license is getting a new look.
Gov. Ron DeSantis unveiled the redesigned Florida Driver License and state identification card Tuesday, September 29, during a Cabinet meeting in Tallahassee.
According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, or FLHSMV, the new cards will begin rolling out at service centers across the state Wednesday, September 30.
New design highlights Florida landmarks
The redesigned license includes images and symbols connected to Florida’s identity.
The front features the Castillo de San Marcos in St. Augustine, considered the oldest masonry fort in the continental United States.
The design also incorporates elements connected to Florida’s natural environment and space program, along with enhanced security features intended to make the cards more difficult to counterfeit.
Online availability expected later
Initially, the redesigned cards will be available through service centers across Florida.
Online orders through MyDMVPortal are expected to become available in early November.
The change does not mean Florida residents must immediately replace a valid driver’s license simply because the design has changed. The redesigned card will become part of the state’s regular issuance process.
Citizenship designation also required under state law
Another change involving Florida driver’s licenses is scheduled under legislation passed in 2026.
State law requires that, by July 1, 2027, driver’s licenses and identification cards issued to qualified applicants whose records identify them as U.S. citizens include a citizenship designation when the document is issued, renewed or replaced.
