Meta tests AI glasses designed to remember details of a user’s daily life

Internal project known as “Super Sensing” could continuously capture audio and take photos every few seconds, allowing artificial intelligence to retrieve information from a person’s routine

Meta is testing a new generation of smart glasses designed to capture much more information about a user’s daily life and use artificial intelligence to help retrieve those details later.

According to the Financial Times, the internal project is known as Super Sensing and includes prototypes capable of continuously capturing audio and taking photographs every few seconds throughout the day.

An artificial memory for everyday life

The idea is to give artificial intelligence more context about what the user sees, hears and does. Instead of relying only on commands given at a specific moment, the AI could access information collected earlier and use it as a kind of digital memory.

For example, someone who cannot remember where they left their keys could ask the system for help. The AI could analyze previously captured information to determine where the object was last seen. The same concept could potentially be used to recall details from conversations or other moments during the day.

How it differs from current Meta glasses

Current Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses already include cameras, microphones and artificial intelligence features, but recording is activated by the user and the devices include an LED designed to signal when the camera is being used.

The Super Sensing concept would significantly expand the amount of information collected by the glasses, with sensors operating much more frequently and providing AI with a continuous stream of context about the user’s surroundings.

Two prototypes reportedly being developed under the project are internally known as Aperol and Bellini.

Privacy is one of the biggest questions

The project has also raised questions about how people around the person wearing the glasses would know when they are being recorded.

According to reports about the internal discussions, Meta executives have considered whether future prototypes should operate without activating the LED indicator currently used to show that the camera is recording.

That possibility is particularly significant because the glasses would not capture only information about their owner. People nearby could also appear in photographs or have their voices captured by the microphones.

The technology is still being tested

Despite claims circulating on social media, Meta has not announced a commercial product capable of recording a person’s entire life 24 hours a day.

Super Sensing remains an internal project involving prototypes, and there is no confirmation that Aperol or Bellini will reach consumers in their current form.

Meta has said it does not comment on internal prototypes and has indicated that privacy protections are considered as new features are developed.
