“Wild Horse Nine,” starring Sam Rockwell and John Malkovich, explores CIA involvement in Chile and draws attention at the Venice Film Festival
One of the movies beginning to attract attention during Hollywood’s awards season received a lengthy ovation at the Venice Film Festival.
“Wild Horse Nine,” the latest film from director Martin McDonagh, received approximately 13 minutes of applause following its festival premiere.
McDonagh is known for movies including Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and The Banshees of Inisherin.
Story involves the CIA and Chile
The new drama is set against the backdrop of CIA involvement in events surrounding Chile’s 1973 coup.
Sam Rockwell and John Malkovich play CIA agents sent to Easter Island.
The cast also includes Parker Posey and Steve Buscemi.
The production was filmed on Easter Island itself, creating significant logistical challenges for the crew.
John Malkovich enters the awards conversation
Malkovich’s performance is already beginning to appear in early discussions about potential contenders for the 2027 Academy Awards.
The race, however, is still in its early stages.
Film festivals including Venice, Telluride and Toronto traditionally serve as major showcases for movies that later become part of Hollywood’s awards season.
“Wild Horse Nine” is scheduled for a theatrical release this year.
