Gonzalo and Fay keep two tropical storms active in the Atlantic

National Hurricane Center is monitoring both systems Friday; current tracks remain away from Florida

Two tropical storms are active in the Atlantic this Friday, September 25, during the heart of hurricane season.

The National Hurricane Center is monitoring Gonzalo near the Cabo Verde Islands and Fay over the open Atlantic.

Both systems remain active in the NHC’s latest advisories, but their current tracks do not pose an immediate threat to Florida.

Gonzalo moves near Cabo Verde

Gonzalo strengthened Friday as it moved near the Cabo Verde Islands.

In the 11 a.m. advisory, local Cabo Verde time, the system had maximum sustained winds of 50 mph, or approximately 85 kilometers per hour.

The center of the storm was about 120 miles east of the southernmost islands and was moving north-northwest.

The NHC expected some fluctuations in intensity before a gradual weakening trend over the weekend.

Fay remains over the open Atlantic

Fay also continues to be monitored.

In Friday’s advisory, the storm was more than 1,000 miles west-southwest of the Azores.

Maximum sustained winds were around 50 mph.

The system was moving slowly westward across the Atlantic.

September falls within the most active part of hurricane season

The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June 1 through November 30.

Historically, August, September and October account for a significant share of tropical activity.

The National Hurricane Center regularly updates the position, intensity and forecast tracks of tropical systems while they remain active.
