Velvet, plaid, ties, capes and athletic-inspired pieces are among the trends beginning to shape the new season
Summer is winding down in the United States, and a new aesthetic is beginning to take over store displays, social media feeds and fashion searches.
For fall 2026, there is no single dominant look.
Instead, the season is bringing together gothic romance, preppy references, athletic influences and nostalgia.
Black lace, dark florals, velvet, plaid and capes are among the trends highlighted for the season.
Ties return to women’s fashion
One accessory making a noticeable comeback is the necktie.
The piece is being paired with shirts, blazers and outfits inspired by classic collegiate style.
The trend also reflects the return of traditional preppy elements.
Among Gen Z and Gen Alpha shoppers, trend data shows growing interest in turtleneck sweaters, argyle patterns and miniskirts.
Sportswear stays, but gets a new look
The athletic influence that dominated part of the summer is not going away either.
Windbreakers, track pants and Formula 1-inspired jackets continue to appear, but they are increasingly being paired with more polished pieces.
Pinterest trend data released over the summer showed significant growth in searches related to sport-luxe, including a 276% increase for “baddie tracksuit outfit” and a 185% increase for looks featuring capri pants.
The result is a fall season where different decades and styles are being mixed together in the same wardrobe.
