September marks the beginning of a new chapter for New York theater, with premieres, returning productions and shows featuring major names from film and television
Fall officially begins later in September, but a new season is already taking the stage in New York.
Broadway welcomes new plays this month while major productions continue to attract tourists and New Yorkers.
Among the new arrivals is “School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls Play,” by Jocelyn Bioh, which begins previews on September 8 ahead of its official opening later in the month.
Horror comes to Broadway
Another production attracting attention is “Paranormal Activity,” a stage adaptation of the horror movie franchise.
The production uses lighting, sound and stage effects to bring the horror experience to the theater, with its Broadway opening scheduled for September.
Later in the month, performances of “Other Desert Cities” are also set to begin, featuring a cast that includes Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Ed Harris, Allison Janney, Joe Keery and Lily Rabe.
Broadway favorites remain among the biggest draws
At the same time, productions that have become Broadway staples continue to draw large audiences.
During the week ending August 30, “Moulin Rouge! The Musical,” “Hamilton,” “MJ The Musical,” “The Lion King” and “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” were among Broadway’s 10 highest-grossing productions.
Broadway welcomed 223,867 theatergoers that week, generating more than $25.7 million in total ticket sales.
