After Labor Day: 7 U.S. destinations to enjoy during the shoulder season

The end of summer means fewer crowds in many tourist destinations, creating opportunities for more relaxed trips throughout September and early fall

Labor Day weekend marks the unofficial end of summer for many Americans. But for travelers who can take a trip after the holiday, it can be one of the most interesting times of the year to explore different parts of the United States.

The period between the busy summer season and the winter travel rush is commonly known as the shoulder season. In many destinations, that means fewer tourists, more comfortable temperatures and, depending on demand, opportunities to find better hotel rates.

Cape Cod after the summer crowds

In Massachusetts, Cape Cod remains an attractive coastal destination even after the peak summer season ends.

The weeks after Labor Day are sometimes referred to locally as “local summer.” The large summer crowds begin to disappear, while beaches, restaurants and small towns across the Cape continue to attract visitors.

More comfortable weather in Charleston

In South Carolina, Charleston enters an appealing period for travelers interested in exploring the city on foot.

The intense summer heat gradually begins to ease, making it more comfortable to visit the historic district, restaurants and outdoor attractions.

Miami before the winter rush

In Florida, September and part of the fall typically bring lower tourism demand before the winter high season begins.

The region remains hot and humid, however, and this period also falls within Atlantic hurricane season. Travelers should monitor weather forecasts and possible alerts before their trip.

The mountains offer another option

Jackson Hole, Wyoming, offers a completely different experience after the busy summer season and before ski season begins.

Other options include Asheville, North Carolina; Sedona, Arizona; and Bar Harbor, Maine, depending on the type of vacation and the timing of the trip.

In several of these destinations, fall brings another major attraction: changing foliage and colorful landscapes.
