Airfares remain high in the U.S. and lower fuel costs may take time to reach travelers

Average ticket prices have increased in 2026 as airlines continue to face high operating costs and volatility in the fuel market

A drop in fuel prices does not necessarily mean airline tickets will immediately become cheaper in the United States.

After months of higher fares, airline executives and analysts interviewed by the Associated Press say travelers could continue facing elevated ticket prices in the months ahead.

The average airfare in the United States increased from approximately $405 in late 2025 to $436 by mid-2026.

Fuel remains a major expense for airlines

One of the biggest factors affecting ticket prices is the cost of jet fuel.

In September, jet fuel prices climbed above $4.50 per gallon, nearly twice the average recorded in 2025, according to the AP.

Fuel now accounts for nearly one-third of airlines’ operating costs, making carriers particularly vulnerable to fluctuations in oil prices.

Why don’t airfares fall immediately?

Airlines set schedules and pricing strategies months in advance.

That means changes in fuel costs are not necessarily reflected immediately in ticket prices.

Carriers including United and American have also adjusted operations in response to higher costs, while passengers who wait until closer to their travel dates to book flights generally face even higher fares.

For ticket prices to decline more consistently, analysts say fuel prices would need not only to fall but remain stable long enough for airlines to incorporate those lower costs into their planning.
