Hourlong standoff leads to partial bridge closure after police say the man advanced toward officers while holding a knife
A man armed with a knife was fatally shot by police after climbing onto the cables of the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City, triggering a major police response at one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks.
Authorities said specially trained officers spent about an hour trying to convince the man to come down and drop the weapon.
Police say man claimed to have a bomb
During negotiations, authorities said the man claimed he had a bomb and also expressed an intention to take his own life.
Officers continued trying to persuade him to surrender the knife.
According to police, the situation escalated when the man began moving quickly toward an officer while still holding the weapon.
Another officer positioned on the bridge roadway fired one shot.
Brooklyn Bridge partially closed
The man was removed from the structure and taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Part of the encounter was captured on officers’ body-worn cameras.
The police response led to a partial closure of the Brooklyn Bridge and caused significant traffic disruptions.
The man’s identity was not immediately released, and authorities continued investigating whether any explosive device was actually present.
