Jury fails to reach a unanimous decision after seven days of deliberations in Lindsay Clancy case involving postpartum psychosis defense
One of the most closely watched criminal trials in the United States in recent weeks has ended without a verdict.
A judge declared a mistrial in the case of Lindsay Clancy, 36, who is accused of killing her three children in Massachusetts in 2023.
Jurors deliberated for seven days but were unable to reach a unanimous decision on Clancy’s criminal responsibility.
Defense argued postpartum psychosis
Clancy did not deny killing the children.
Her defense argued that she was suffering from severe postpartum psychosis and asked jurors to find her not guilty by reason of insanity.
During the trial, experts offered differing assessments of her mental state.
Prosecutors argued that Clancy understood her actions and was able to distinguish right from wrong.
Case could be tried again
The lack of a unanimous verdict led the judge to end the trial without a determination of guilt or innocence.
Clancy continues to face murder charges and remains in custody at a psychiatric facility.
Prosecutors have not yet officially announced whether they will retry the case. A hearing to discuss the next steps is scheduled for September 29.
The case has received national attention and brought postpartum psychosis and the role of mental illness in criminal cases back into the national conversation.
