President says Pickaxe Mountain could be targeted “very soon” as tensions surrounding Iran’s nuclear program intensify
President Donald Trump said the United States could soon strike a fortified area known as Pickaxe Mountain, located near Iran’s Natanz nuclear facility.
The statement increases pressure on Iran’s nuclear program as the military conflict between Washington and Tehran continues to escalate.
According to Reuters, the area contains two tunnel complexes built deep underground.
Underground complex sits near Natanz
Natanz is one of the most important facilities in Iran’s uranium enrichment program and has already suffered significant damage during the conflict.
The underground structures near the facility have drawn attention from officials and experts because deeply buried sites can be difficult to reach with conventional military strikes.
Trump said the United States could target Pickaxe Mountain “very soon,” but did not provide details about a potential operation.
Washington increases pressure on Tehran
The statement comes as Washington also increases economic pressure on Iran.
The U.S. Treasury Department announced additional Iran-related sanctions this week, including measures targeting a Turkish investment bank and two subsidiaries.
The possibility of another strike keeps Iran’s nuclear program at the center of the growing confrontation between the two countries.
