The world’s largest balloon festival puts New Mexico on travelers’ itineraries during one of the city’s most anticipated times of the year
For several days in October, the skies over Albuquerque, New Mexico, become a spectacle unlike almost anywhere else in the United States.
Hundreds of hot-air balloons take part in the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, an event that has helped turn the city into one of the country’s most distinctive fall destinations.
The 2026 event is scheduled to take place from October 3 through October 11.
Hundreds of balloons take to the sky
One of the event’s best-known traditions is the Mass Ascension, when hundreds of balloons begin taking off in the morning.
Another highlight comes after sunset. During the popular Balloon Glows, pilots illuminate their balloons while they remain on the ground.
Along with traditional balloons, the event features special shapes that create some of the festival’s most recognizable images.
Albuquerque offers more than the festival
Travelers visiting the city can also use the trip to explore other attractions in New Mexico.
Old Town Albuquerque showcases the region’s history and architecture, while the Sandia Peak Tramway carries visitors into the mountains for panoramic views of the city and surrounding desert.
Another attraction is Petroglyph National Monument, which protects thousands of images carved into volcanic rock.
The trip requires planning
The popularity of the Balloon Fiesta creates strong demand for accommodations and transportation during the event.
Travelers hoping to experience the main activities should also be prepared for early mornings. Many balloon flights take place shortly after sunrise, when wind conditions are often more favorable.
